This book is pretty much our official story so far. It really does only seem like last week we played our first gig in at the Annandale hotel in Sydney. Since then we’ve been given the opportunity to turn into the people and musicians we wanted to be.

The people who gave us the opportunity were the fans. So this book is like a thank you. We want everyone to know the story of how four western Sydney teenagers picked up their instruments and dreamt of being one of the biggest bands in the world. There’s also some embarrassing photos of us dicking around and some facts that some of us didn’t even know. So we hope you enjoy it!

Ashton’s full name is Ashton Fletcher Irwin.
He was born on 7th July, 1996 and his starsign is Cancer.
His biggest celebrity crushes are Hayley Williams and Jade Thirlwall.
His all time favourite movie is Pursuit of Happiness.
He is both Aussie and American.
His fave TV show is Family Guy. Good choice, Ashton!
He is 6ft tall, and apparently all of the boys are of a similar height.
Before he joined 5SOS, he apparently hated them! From watching their YouTube videos, he said he hated the way they messed around and forgot their words. Let’s hope he doesn’t still hate them…
He says he likes girls who are “unique and beautiful in their own way”.
According to the other boys, Ashton is the best listener out of the band.
He joined the band in December 2011.
His favourite subject is visual arts.
He likes to listen to heavy music.
He says that his two biggest fears are needles and breaking his wrist.
He has a nickname that only members of his family call him. We wonder what it is?
He had his first kiss when he was aged 16.

Calum’s full name is Calum Thomas Hood.
He was born on 25th January, 1996 and his starsign is Aquarius.
His biggest celebrity crush ever is of course Katy Perry.
He is Kiwi and Scottish, not Asian like most people think.
His favourite food is pizza, and his favourite topping is ham and pineapple.
He is the most feminine of the band because he has no hair on his legs.
He prefers brown hair on a girl. Soz to all the blondies out there.
He represented Australia in soccer, and went to Brazil to play. However, he then gave the soccer up to pursue his music career.
Ashton thinks that Calum has the best “ass” in the band, and apparently has the best body too. We’ll be the ones to judge that!
He had his first kiss aged 13.
He prefers pancakes over waffles. Who doesn’t?
His favourite fruit is apples, and he used to take a bite and leave them around the house when he was younger.
His favourite singer is Guy Sebastian, but it was Chris Brown when he was younger.
His favourite childhood movie is Monsters Inc.
The only type of cheese he likes is cheddar.
His favourite colour is baby blue.
If he was a girl, he said he would date Michael out of the band.
He hates to cross at zebra crossings for some strange reason.

Michael’s full name is Michael Gordon Clifford. He hates his middle name.
He was born on 20th November, 1995 and his starsign is Scorpio.
He once admitted that his favourite word was ‘cheeseburger’. Very random.
Michael is English Scottish, Irish, German and Australian. So, bit of everything really.
He is apparently the most obsessive with girls out of the band, and his fave chat up line is “nice shoes, let’s f**k”.
His signature dance move is the sprinkler/lasso. Awesome!
Michael once said that the verified tick makes him feel like a “majestical unicorn with a big horn”.
He had never been to a concert before he played at their own.
If he could learn to play another instrument along with the guitar, he would play the flute.
He said that his favourite thing about being in the band is meeting the 5SOS fans.
He once said that he would turn gay for his guitar…
Ever wondered what Michael Clifford would rather do than shave his hair off? Eat a jar of vegemite.

Luke’s full name is Luke Robert Hemmings.
He was born on 16th July, 1996 and his starsign is Cancer.
One of his most favourite TV shows is ‘How I Met Your Mother’.
He described his perfect date as going to the beach, and then to Cold Rock. Sounds pretty good to us!
The boys think that Luke is the most responsible member of the band, as he takes thing more seriously than the others.
He says that he would date a fan two years younger than him.
His favourite flavour of ice cream is cookies and cream, he’s our kind of guy!
He once said that he would love to book out a whole Nando’s restaurant for him and the boys, and the rest of the 5SOS family! We’re there!
He loves the movies 17 Again and Monsters Inc, but he’s never ever seen Titanic! Scandalous.
His love of ice cream helped him win the 5SOS Pizza Hut ice cream eating competition, where he had about 17 bowls of the stuff.
He plays soccer, is amazing at snow boarding and used to be able to ride a skateboard, so he’s pretty sporty!
He thinks that Pizza is the best food ever, and his favourite topping is pepperoni. He also said he would choose pizza over donuts any day.
Apparently Luke farts the most out of the rest of the boys. Lovely.

They thought of the band name while they were in math class.
They did once think about auditioning for the X Factor, but didn’t in fear of being known as ‘that band from X Factor’.
Their biggest musical inspirations are Blink 182, All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, Mayday Parade and funnily enough… Ed Sheeran.
They were all sick whilst recording the Unplugged EP, but still went ahead and did it.
If they like someone, their way to get the persons attention is to throw a ball at them. Smooth.
They admitted that they would rather drink 100 cups of Coke, than eat 100 cheeseburgers.
They used to brush their teeth together before every show. One of the strangest pre-show rituals we’ve ever heard of.
They all think that Batman is hotter than Spiderman. We have to agree.
The boys all fell in love with the English accent when they visited Blackpool.
Michael, Calum and Luke apparently used to play to a crowd full of drunk people in their lobby in London, without any pants on!
Although the band and Ashton used to hate each other before Ashton joined, they said they’re like brothers now.
Their song “Out Of My Limit” was originally called “Over The Limit” but they had to change it due to it sounding like it was about alcohol.
They once had to stop and busk on the street due to not having enough money for petrol to get home!
Their favourite place in the world is Australia, obvs.
The boys admitted that they very rarely wear matching socks.
They once got shouted at in a shop for being dressed up in their costumes.
They admitted that it’s difficult to be able to balance school with their career in the band at the same time.

The original band first formed on 3rd April, 2011.

5 Seconds of Summer (also known as 5SOS) are an Australian pop rock/pop punk band.

Formed in Sydney in 2011, the band consists of Luke Hemmings (lead vocals, guitar), Michael Clifford (guitar, vocals), Calum Hood (bass guitar, vocals) and Ashton Irwin (drums, vocals). The group were originally YouTube celebrities, posting videos of themselves covering songs from various artists in 2011. From there, they gained a small following in 2012 after posting a series of cover versions of popular songs onto YouTube, then rose to international fame when One Direction invited them on their Take Me Home Tour.

The group have been referred to as a boy band in the media. In February 2014, they released "She Looks So Perfect" as their debut worldwide release. It topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Their self-titled debut studio album was released in June 2014, which peaked #1 in 11 countries.

2011–12: Origin and debut

5 Seconds of Summer at their EP launch gig at The Metro Theatre on 25 November 2012

5 Seconds of Summer began in December 2011 when Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood, who all attended Norwest Christian College, started posting videos of themselves performing covers of popular songs together on Hemmings' YouTube channel. Hemmings' first video, a cover of Mike Posner's "Please Don't Go", was posted on 3 February 2011.Their cover of Chris Brown's "Next to You" received over 600,000 hits.In December 2011, they were joined by drummer Ashton Irwin, and the four-man line up was completed.

The band attracted interest from major music labels and publishers, and signed a publishing deal with Sony ATV Music Publishing. Despite having had no promotion apart from on Facebook and Twitter, their first music release, an EP entitled Unplugged, reached number 3 on the iTunes chart in Australia and the Top 20 in both New Zealand and Sweden. Their international following increased significantly once again when One Direction member Louis Tomlinson posted the link to their YouTube video of their song "Gotta Get Out", stating that he'd been a fan of 5 Seconds of Summer "for a while". 5 Seconds of Summer were once again the subject of interest for One Direction following the release of their first single, "Out of My Limit", on 19 November 2012, this time with Niall Horan tweeting the link to the video clip.

5 Seconds of Summer spent the second half of 2012 writing and developing their sound with Christian Lo Russo and Joel Chapman of Australian band Amy Meredith, with whom they wrote two of the songs that feature on the Somewhere New EP: "Beside You" and "Unpredictable". The EP was also co-produced by Joel Chapman. 5 Seconds of Summer released their first single "Out of My Limit" on 19 November 2012, with the video clip for the song receiving over 100,000 views within the first 24 hours. In December 2012, the boys embarked on a songwriting trip to London, where they wrote with various artists including McFly, Roy Stride of Scouting for Girls, Nick Hodgson of Kaiser Chiefs, Jamie Scott, Jake Gosling, Steve Robson and James Bourne of Busted.

2013–present: 5 Seconds of Summer and LIVESOS

On 14 February 2013, it was announced that 5 Seconds of Summer would support One Direction on their worldwide Take Me Home Tour. The tour kicked off at the O2 Arena in London on 23 February 2013, and 5 Seconds of Summer joined One Direction for shows in the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand, including seven shows at Allphones Arena in 5 Seconds of Summer's home town of Sydney. Whilst on a break from the Take Me Home Tour, 5 Seconds of Summer returned home to Australia where they played a National headlining tour, with all dates selling out within minutes. It was around this time when the band began to gain popularity and become more well-known. On 21 November 2013, the band announced that they had signed to Capitol Records.

On 5 February 2014, 5 Seconds of Summer listed their debut major label single "She Looks So Perfect" for pre-order on the iTunes Store.

The connection between 5SOS and One Direction extends to both artists being managed by London-based Modest Management. This has led to 5SOS being called a boy band in the media. Members of the band have said the group is not a boy band. Unlike many boy bands, they write their own songs, play their own instruments, and they are not primarily a dance group. Nevertheless, the band has attracted a fanatical following of girls much like other boy bands. Ashton Irwin has compared the band's female following to Fall Out Boy which also has a sizable female fanbase. John Feldmann, frontman of Goldfinger and producer on 5 Seconds of Summer, attributes 5 Seconds of Summer's fanbase to "a fundamental change in the pop punk demo[graphic]", mentioning the gradual demographic shift away from the majority male audiences of early 1990s pop punk acts such as Blink-182 and Green Day.

In late March 2014, "She Looks So Perfect" was released in UK. Despite only one day on top in the British iTunes store and ending its week in the lower end of the top 10, 5 Seconds of Summer became only the fourth Australian band to have a UK number-one single, and the first to do so in 14 years. In the following week's chart the song dropped to number 10, which was the biggest drop from number one since McFly's ""Baby's Coming Back"/"Transylvania" fell from number one to number 20, also in its second week on the UK chart. On 5 March 2014, it was announced that 5 Seconds of Summer would join One Direction again, supporting them on their 2014 Where We Are Tour in the US, Canada, UK and Europe. On 9 April 2014, the She Looks So Perfect EP debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200.

On 9 May, they released their second single, Don't Stop. It debuted at Number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, 3,000 behind Ella Henderson's Ghost. Billboard said 'In the vein of Green Day's "She" and Blink-182's "All The Small Things," "Don't Stop" is 5SOS' bid for a deceptively charming pop-punk anthem, with lyrics that are stickily sweet in their awkward flirtatiousness. The bridge could be more polished, but that hook is a highlight of the whole album'

On 13 May 2014, the band announced that their debut album, named 5 Seconds of Summer, would be released on 27 June 2014 in Europe and Australia with other releases coming later. The album won a Kerrang! award; Luke Hemmings said it was a real honour to win one, as all the band's idols are in Kerrang!.

It was announced on 22 November 2014 that the band would release their first live album LIVESOS on 15 December 2014.
